Life as a Progress consultant by Dylan Kortenbach

If you had told me almost 20 years ago that I’d one day be a consultant, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. Back then, I was focused on the science — learning every aspect of bioprocessing, mastering GMP, and contributing to the delivery of advanced therapies. My world was the cleanroom, the process, and the team and people beside me. Early in my career, I already came into contact with Progress – Experts in Life Sciences, but consultancy wasn’t on my radar yet. I enjoyed being part of a team, building something tangible, and seeing the direct impact of our work on patients. Over the years, I worked at AMT (later uniQure), and HALIX— each role offering a new perspective on what it takes to bring innovative medicines from concept to reality.

A Small World, Familiar Faces
The pharmaceutical world is surprisingly small. You keep running into familiar faces — colleagues, collaborators, or people who know someone you’ve worked with. It creates a sense of connection and shared purpose that makes this field truly special. Throughout my career, I’ve realized that connecting people is what drives me most. Whether aligning manufacturing with quality and engineering or helping teams see the bigger picture, I enjoy building bridges and bringing structure where it’s needed.

The Step Into Consultancy
Becoming a consultant wasn’t a sudden decision — it was a natural next step. After years of working inside organizations, I wanted to use my experience to support different companies. To share lessons learned, bring clarity to complex situations, and help teams move forward. What I love most about consultancy at Progress is the variety. Every project brings new people, new challenges, and new opportunities to make an impact. As a consultant, you often get to contribute to initiatives that wouldn’t be possible as an internal employee — bringing fresh perspectives and helping companies take the next step. And when a client tells me how much they appreciate the support I’ve given — that’s when I feel truly proud of my work.

Growing Together at Progress
Besides client work, I’m actively involved in Progress internal projects and knowledge teams. These are excellent opportunities to grow my own skills while supporting colleagues across the field. Sharing experiences, discussing challenges, and learning from one another keeps me motivated and inspired.

Looking at the Bigger Picture
At Progress – Experts in Life Sciences, I’ve found a team of passionate, talented professionals who share the same drive: making the life sciences industry stronger, one project at a time. We challenge and support each other, share knowledge, and celebrate successes — both at work and outside of it. After nearly two decades in this industry, consultancy has given me a renewed sense of purpose. It allows me to keep learning, stay connected, and help others succeed. Because in the end, being a consultant isn’t just about delivering expertise — it’s about listening, connecting, and building progress together.
